Our website opens new windows to display content. This allows new information
to appear without replacing the existing information on the page. Because
online advertisers also use popup windows to display advertisements, tools
known as popup blockers are available that block them. These tools can block
useful popup windows along with advertisements, which prevents some online
resources from working correctly.
Most commonly, this type of conflict will present itself when nothing appears
to happen when logging into an online tool or when clicking a button on a
website. This occurs because the popup blocker prevents the new window from
appearing.
Note: Holding the Ctrl key when clicking a link or button will
temporarily disable most popup blockers.
How do I know if I have a popup blocker installed?
Online resources are available to check if popup blockers are installed on your
computer. One such resource is available by navigating to
http://www.ualr.edu/scholars/files/detect_pop-up.html. When this page
opens, the text "A popup killer is detected" will appear if the popup window
was blocked. If the popup window was not blocked, the text "NO popup killer is
detected" will appear, and the popup window will open in the background.
What types of popup blockers are available?
The most common applications that provide popup blocking are search toolbars,
such as Google's, MSN's, and Yahoo's. Thes toolbars appear at the top of the
browser window. Recently, this capability has also been added directly to
Internet Explorer.
Can I still have popup windows appear when I need them?
Because many tools are available that block popup windows, there is no single
way to disable the blocking function and allow particular popup windows to
appear. A computer may also have multiple popup blockers installed, each with a
different method to temporarily disable its blocking. Holding the Ctrl key
when clicking a link or button will temporarily disable most popup blockers.
If popup windows are still blocked, the popup blockers must be disabled
manually. Most popup blockers appear as toolbars at the top of the browser
window. Look for buttons on these toolbars for changing settings or options, or
buttons that refer to popup blocking, to disable the popup-blocking function.
